Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo is an exciting fantasy novel written by Obert Skye. It tells the story of Leven, a seemingly normal boy from Oklahoma, and Winter Frore, a girl who feels lost. Together, they go on an amazing journey to find the magical dream world called Foo.
Meet the Characters!
Leven Thumps
Leven is fourteen years old. He is the grandson of Hector Thumps, who built the special gateway to Foo. At first, Leven doesn't know anything about Foo or his family's secret past. He learns more about these things as his adventure unfolds.
Leven is an "offing." This means he has a special power to change or influence the future. Because of this unique ability, he is being hunted by a very powerful and evil being named Sabine.
Winter Frore
Winter is thirteen years old. She has light blonde hair and deep green eyes. Her pale skin and flowing clothes make her look like a quiet spirit. She was brought to Foo by chance, but she can't remember anything about her life before.
Winter tries hard to figure out her purpose in this new world. She is a "nit," which means she can freeze things just by thinking about it! She first noticed this power when her hair floated and became covered in ice. This scared her mother, Janet, a lot.
Geth
Geth is the rightful leader of Foo. Sabine, the evil being, turned him into a tiny seed. Sabine left him outside for birds to eat. Luckily, Antsel rescued him. Antsel brought Geth to our world and planted him in the ground.
Later, Geth finds Leven, Winter, and Clover. He joins them on their journey to the Gateway. Geth is a "lithen," meaning he believes that fate decides everything. He works to stop reality and Foo from crashing into each other. He also fights against Sabine, who wants to rule both worlds.
Sabine
Sabine is the darkest and most selfish creature in Foo. He was taken from our world when he was nine years old. Now, he is a "nit" just like Winter, with the power to freeze anything he wants. Sabine desperately wants to find the gateway. He believes if he can travel freely between Foo and reality, he can rule them both.
His desires are so evil that even the shadows he casts try to get away from him. This gives him a strange power. He can send his dark shadows into people's dreams. This lets him watch and even mess with what happens in our reality.
Clover Ernest
Clover is a funny and clever "sycophant" from Foo. His job is to look after Leven, who is his "burn." A "burn" is like a special person a sycophant is assigned to protect. Clover's last "burn" was Antsel, who sadly dies at the start of the first book.
Clover stayed hidden near Leven for fourteen years. Leven finally saw him hiding under his bed! Clover is always trying to find a new nickname for Leven, since Winter took his first one, "Lev." Some of his ideas include "Chief," "Dog," or "Big Man." Clover has the power to "overshadow" other people, making them feel his presence. As a sycophant, there's only one way he can die, but only other sycophants know what it is. (Clover even has his own book: Professor Winsnicker's Book of Proper Etiquette for Well-Mannered Sycophants!)
