The Levi H. Gale House is a special old building located at 85 Touro Street in Newport, Rhode Island, United States. It's known for its interesting history and how it was saved. Today, it still serves an important role in the community.

About the Levi H. Gale House

This historic house was designed by a well-known architect named Russell Warren. It was built in 1835 for a lawyer named Levi Gale. The house is a great example of the kind of buildings that were popular in Newport a long time ago.

A Special Move

Something very interesting happened to the Levi H. Gale House. In 1925 and 1926, the entire building was moved from its first spot on Washington Square. This move happened because a new courthouse was being built there.

A group of people from the Jewish community, who attended the nearby Touro Synagogue, helped save the house. They paid to have the building moved. Their goal was to keep the house safe and use it as a Jewish Community Center. This center is a place where people can gather for activities, learning, and community events.

Today, the Levi H. Gale House stands at the corner of Touro and Division Street. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. This means it's recognized as an important historical site. The house continues to be used as a Jewish community center, serving the community just as planned.
