About Lewald Glacier
Where is Lewald Glacier Located?
Lewald Glacier is found in a very cold part of the world, on the eastern side of South Georgia. This island is in the southern Atlantic Ocean, near Antarctica. The glacier is located west of a place called Cape Vahsel. It moves slowly towards the north, eventually reaching the sea.
How Did Lewald Glacier Get Its Name?
The glacier was named by a group of explorers from Germany. They were part of the Second German Antarctic Expedition, which took place between 1911 and 1912. The leader of this expedition was a man named Wilhelm Filchner.
They decided to name the glacier after Theodor Lewald. He was a very important government official in Germany at the time. He worked in the "Reichsamt des Innern," which was like a government department for internal affairs. Theodor Lewald was very interested in and supported the expedition, so the explorers honored him by naming this glacier after him.
