The Lex Malacitana (pronounced "Lex Mah-lah-see-TAH-nah") is an ancient Roman law. Its full name is Lex Flavia Malacitana, which means "Flavian law of Malaca." This important law was written on a bronze tablet. It contained rules about how Roman officials, called duoviri iuri dicundo, should do their jobs.

This tablet was found in the 20th century. It was discovered near a Roman city called Malaca. Today, this city is known as Málaga in Spain. The law was created between AD 81 and 84. This was during the early rule of the Roman Emperor Domitian. The city of Malaca followed this law. It gave free-born people the special rights of Roman citizenship.

Understanding Roman City Laws

The Lex Malacitana is a very important historical find. It helps us understand how Roman cities were governed. It is one of the most complete versions of the lex Flavia municipalis. This was a set of laws for Roman towns during the Flavian dynasty.

Other Important Roman Laws

Historians study the Lex Malacitana along with two other laws. These are the lex Salpensana and the lex Irnitana. All three tablets together give us a full picture. They show how Roman municipal law worked. They also provide details about how courts operated in Roman cities.

Where to See the Tablets

Today, you can see these amazing bronze tablets. They are on display at the National Archaeological Museum, Madrid. They are very special because they are some of the only surviving copies of these ancient laws.

Efforts to Move the Law Tablet

In December 2016, a group of people asked the Spanish Parliament to move the Lex Malacitana. They wanted it to be returned to the Museo de Málaga in its original city. The Spanish Ministry of Culture looked into this request. However, on March 12, 2018, the Spanish Government decided not to move the tablet. It remains in Madrid.
