Leyla Bouzid was born in 1984 in Tunis, a city in Tunisia. She is a talented filmmaker who writes movie scripts and directs films.

Early Life and Learning

Leyla Bouzid grew up in Tunis, just like her father, Nouri Bouzid, who is also a famous film director. After finishing high school, she moved to Paris, France. There, she studied literature at a well-known university called the Sorbonne.

Leyla then went on to study filmmaking at La Fémis, a very respected film school. For her graduation project, she made a short film called Twitching. This film was shot in Tunisia.

Twitching was shown at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in 2012. It was very popular and even won a special award called the Grand Jury Prize at another festival, the Festival Premiers Plans d'Angers.

Her Film Career

In 2013, Leyla Bouzid made another short film called Zakaria. This was her first short film that was officially produced.

Later, in 2015, she directed her first full-length movie, As I Open My Eyes. This film was chosen to be shown at many important film festivals around the world. It won awards at places like the Venice Film Festival and the Carthage Film Festival.

As I Open My Eyes tells a story about a young woman in Tunisia. It explores what it means to be Tunisian during a time of big changes in the country, just before the Tunisian Revolution. The movie shows how a young person's life connects with the history of their nation.
