Liam Ó Murchú (born 1929, died 2015) was a well-known Irish television presenter. He worked for RTÉ, Ireland's national TV and radio station. He was also a talented writer.
Early Life and Learning
Liam Ó Murchú was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1929. He went to school there, including a Christian Brothers school. He even won a scholarship to a secondary school called the North Mon.
Later, he studied literature at University College Cork. After college, he worked as a clerical officer. He also became a writer, and his books were published in Ireland and other countries.
Career in Television
In 1964, Ó Murchú joined RTÉ. He started as the editor for Irish language programmes. He later became an Assistant Controller of Programmes. He also helped the Director General of RTÉ.
Famous TV Shows
Liam Ó Murchú became very famous for presenting TV shows. One of his most popular shows was Trom agus Éadrom. He won a Jacob's Award in 1976 for his work on this show.
He also presented Up for the Final, a show about sports. He was known for saying "Bualadh Bos" (which means "Clap your hands" in Irish) to encourage the audience to clap. From 1975 to 1978, he also worked with the School of Celtic Studies. This was part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1988, Ó Murchú left RTÉ to start his own TV production company. However, he still appeared on TV sometimes. He presented other programmes, like Lifelines.
In 2002, University College Cork gave him an honorary degree. This was to celebrate his achievements. He also wrote a monthly article for the magazine Ireland's Own. Liam Ó Murchú passed away on June 28, 2015, at the age of 86.
