Licorice pipe facts for kids
A licorice pipe is a fun candy made from licorice. It is shaped like a tobacco pipe, often with bright red sugar balls on the end. These candies usually weigh around 16 grams and are soft and sweet. You can also find other kinds, for example, with blue or yellow sugar balls. The yellow ones sometimes even taste like sea salt!
A Sweet History
The very first known licorice pipe was made a long time ago, back in the 1920s. It was created in Kokkola, Finland, at a factory owned by Heikki Huhtamäki. In Finnish, it's called lakupiippu.
Rules and Regulations
In January 2010, something interesting happened in Norway. Stores were not allowed to display licorice pipes for sale anymore. This rule was put in place because the candy looked like a tobacco product.
Then, in August 2013, licorice pipes were in the news again! There was talk about a new rule from the EU. This rule aimed to prevent tobacco use. It could have stopped the sale of sweets and toys that looked like tobacco products, including licorice pipes. Luckily for fans of the candy, the licorice pipe was eventually allowed to be sold.
A political group in Norway, called the Progress Party, has worked to remove the ban on displaying licorice pipes in stores. They believe people should be able to see and buy these candies easily.
