The Lieblein House is a historic building located at 525 Quincy Street in Hancock, Michigan. It was once a family home but is now used as an office building. It is also known as the Hoover Center. This special building was recognized as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1979. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it is an important place in history.

History of the Lieblein House

The Lieblein House was built in 1895. A man named William Washburn had it built. He owned a clothing store in Hancock. Around 1905, Mr. Washburn sold the house.

Who Owned the House?

Edward Lieblein bought the house. He was a wholesale grocer. This means he sold food and other items in large amounts to stores. He owned stores in Hancock and Calumet. The house stayed in the Lieblein family for many years.

The House Becomes the Hoover Center

In 1979, Edward Lieblein Jr. sold the house. He sold it to Suomi College. This college is now called Finlandia University. The college renamed the building the "Vaino & Judith Hoover Center." This was to honor Vaino and Judith Hoover, who helped pay for the purchase. As of 2009, the building holds important offices for the university. These include the President's office and offices for alumni relations.

What Does the Lieblein House Look Like?

The Lieblein House is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is built in the Queen Anne style. This style was popular for homes in the late 1800s. The house sits on a strong sandstone foundation.

Outside Features of the House

The outside of the house is covered with different types of shingles. Some are rectangular, and some look like fish scales. There is a porch that wraps around the house. It has Doric columns, which are simple, round pillars. The porch also has narrow windows.

Unique Design Elements

The house has a three-story tower called a polygonal turret. It has many sides and narrow windows. A metal roof and a pointed top, called a spire, cover the turret. The porch and turret give the house interesting straight and up-and-down lines. Inside, the house gets light from a bay window. It also has many windows with multiple small glass panes. The roof has gables on three sides. These are the triangular parts of the wall under a sloping roof. The side gables have special windows with leaded glass. These are called Palladian windows.
