A lifeboat is a special kind of small boat or raft carried on larger ships. Its main job is to keep people safe during emergencies at sea, like if the main ship is sinking or catches fire. Think of it as a floating safety pod! By law, bigger ships must always have enough lifeboats for everyone on board.

Why Do Ships Need Lifeboats?

Lifeboats are super important because they are the main way to evacuate people from a ship that is in trouble. When a ship has a serious problem, like a big hole or a fire that can't be controlled, everyone needs to get off quickly and safely. Lifeboats provide a way to do this, keeping people away from the danger and afloat until help arrives. They are built to be very strong and stable, even in rough seas.

The Titanic's Big Lesson

Back in the 1800s, when steamships became popular, lifeboats started to be used more often. But at the start of the 1900s, ships got much bigger, carrying thousands of people. Sadly, the rules about how many lifeboats a ship needed were often ignored.

This became a huge problem on April 15, 1912, when the famous RMS Titanic sank. The Titanic was a giant ship, but it only had enough lifeboats for 1,178 people. This was a disaster because there were 3,330 people on board! Many lives were lost because there weren't enough lifeboats. After the Titanic sank, people realized that bigger ships absolutely needed more lifeboats to keep everyone safe. This sad event led to much stricter rules for ship safety around the world.

Different Kinds of Lifeboats

In the past, lifeboats were often stiff, hard boats that took up a lot of space on a ship's deck. This could make the walkways on the ship very narrow and crowded. To solve this problem, new types of lifeboats were developed.

Today, many ships use inflatable lifeboats, also called liferafts. These are made of strong, flexible material and are stored in compact containers. When needed, they inflate very quickly, often automatically, creating a stable raft. This saves a lot of deck space and makes it easier to launch them in an emergency. There are also "freefall" lifeboats, like the one in the picture, which slide down a ramp and launch themselves into the water, getting people away from the ship very fast.
