Lightspeed Electroid Albegas (光速電神アルベガス, Kōsoku Denjin Arubegasu) is an exciting anime TV series. It aired in Japan, Latin America, Spain, and Italy from 1983 to 1984. The show has 45 episodes, each about 25 minutes long. It's also known by names like "Arbegas" or "Lightspeed ElectroGod Arbegas."

The Story of Albegas

The story begins at a technical high school. Three very smart students, Daisaku, Tetsuya, and Hotaru, build amazing robots. These robots even win school awards!

But then, an evil alien group called the Derinja race attacks. They want to take over all of space, including Earth. To stop them, Hotaru's father, Professor Mizuki, changes the students' robots. He makes them ready for battle. This is how the powerful super robot Albegas is created!

How Albegas Works

Albegas is special because it's made of three separate robots. These robots stack on top of each other to form the giant super robot. There are six different ways they can stack up. Each way gives Albegas a special power or function.

The names of the individual robots come from the first three letters of the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. Albegas's main weapon is the Sanbai Plasma Sword. With this sword, Albegas defeats the enemy Derinja robots, called "Mecha-Fighters," by splitting them in half. Each individual robot also has its own sword.

Albegas's Stackable Forms

When the three robots combine, they form different versions of Albegas. Each version is good for a specific type of battle.

Albegas Mode Abilities Stack (top to bottom) Albegas Colors
Denjin Dimension (Electroid Dimension) This is the basic fighting mode, great for finishing off enemies. Alpha, Beta, Gamma Black, Blue, Red
Magma Dimension This mode helps Albegas fight underground or in very hot places. Beta, Gamma, Alpha Blue, Red, Black
Space Dimension This form is perfect for battles out in outer space. Alpha, Gamma, Beta Black, Red, Blue
Marine Dimension Use this mode for fighting underwater battles. Gamma, Alpha, Beta Red, Black, Blue
Guard Dimension This mode is mainly for defense and protecting itself. Gamma, Beta, Alpha Red, Blue, Black
Sky Dimension This form allows Albegas to fly through the Earth's atmosphere. Beta, Alpha, Gamma Blue, Black, Red

When they combine, the first robot listed forms Albegas's upper body, head, arms, and thighs. The second robot forms the middle part of the body and the back of the lower legs. The third robot forms the waist and the front part of the lower legs.

Smaller Aircraft: Super Abega and New Super Abega

At the start of the series, each pilot used a smaller aircraft to fly into their robot. These three aircraft could also combine into a single jet called the Super Abega.

Soon after, these were replaced by new, improved aircraft. These new aircraft could transform into small robot forms. They could also combine into a better jet called the New Super Abega.

Original Jet Transforming Jet/Robot Pilot
Jet Alpha New Jet Alpha/Jetrobo Alpha Daisaku Enjoji
Jet Beta New Jet Beta/Jetrobo Beta Tetsuya Jin
Jet Gamma New Jet Gamma/Jetrobo Gamma Mizuki Hotaru

The Derinja Civilization

The Derinja are a race of purple-skinned aliens. Their main leader is Grand Deram, a being made of energy living on their home planet, Deram. "President" Azass leads the invading force from an orbital base, with Generalissimo Duston as his top army officer. Later in the series, Bios and his lieutenant Dari replace them.

The Derinja use giant robots called "Mecha-Fighters." These robots often act as the villain of the week, meaning a new one appears in almost every episode. Some Mecha-Fighters are piloted by Derinja soldiers. When Albegas defeats a Mecha-Fighter, its pilot is usually defeated too.

Albegas and Voltron

Albegas was almost part of the famous Voltron universe! The original plan was for Albegas to be the third part of the Voltron: Defender of the Universe series. However, the "Lion Voltron" (from GoLion) was much more popular than the "Vehicle Voltron" (from Armored Fleet Dairugger XV). So, the idea to use Albegas was dropped. Instead, new "Lion Voltron" episodes were made for the American show.

Even though it wasn't used in the TV show, Albegas toys were still released as "Voltron II" or "Gladiator Voltron" by Matchbox. Albegas also made a short appearance as Gladiator Voltron in the Voltron comic book series.

An Unreleased Arcade Game

Did you know Albegas was going to be an arcade game? Sega planned to make a laserdisc game based on the series. Toei Animation was going to create the animation for it. In the U.S., it was going to be published by Bally Midway under the name Cybernault. A test video was even made to show what the game would be like.

However, the game was canceled before it could be released. Despite this, a Japanese magazine called Game Machine listed Albegas as a very successful upright arcade unit in July 1984, even before its official release!
