In 1999, Lil' Flip signed his first music deal with Sucka Free. This was an independent label in Houston, Texas. On July 18, 2000, he released his first album, The Leprechaun.

This album caught the attention of DJ Screw, a famous DJ. DJ Screw invited Flip to join his rap group, the Screwed Up Click. DJ Screw even called Lil' Flip "The Freestyle King."

In 2002, Columbia Records offered Lil' Flip a contract. They also gave Sucka Free a deal to distribute their music. Flip said they respected his past success and saw his future potential.

Lil' Flip released his second album, Undaground Legend, on August 27, 2002. This album quickly became very popular. It was certified Platinum in December 2002, meaning it sold over one million copies. The album included his hit song "The Way We Ball".
