Lila Ibrahim is an American engineer and a successful businesswoman. She is known for her important leadership roles in big technology companies. In 2018, she became the very first Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Google DeepMind, a company that works on advanced artificial intelligence.
Before joining Google DeepMind, Lila Ibrahim held other key positions. She was the Chief Operations Officer at Coursera, a popular online learning platform. She also worked as a Senior Operating Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a company that invests in new businesses. Earlier in her career, she was the Chief of Staff for Craig Barrett, who was the CEO and Chairman of Intel.
Early Life and Education
Lila Ibrahim's parents moved to the United States from another country.
She went to Purdue University to study electrical and computer engineering. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. While at Purdue, she was part of Phi Sigma Rho, a sorority for women studying STEM subjects like science, technology, engineering, and math.
A Career in Tech Leadership
Lila Ibrahim began her career in 1993 at Intel, a famous computer chip company. She started as a design engineer, helping to create the Pentium processor. She worked at Intel for 18 years, taking on many different jobs in technology, marketing, and leadership. One of her important roles there was being the Chief of Staff for Craig Barrett, the CEO.
In 2010, Lila Ibrahim became the Chief of Staff at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. This company is a "venture capital" firm, which means they invest money in new and growing businesses. Through this role, she started working with Coursera.
In 2013, she became the President of Coursera. Later, she was promoted to Chief Business and Operating Officer. She stayed at Coursera until 2017. During this time, she was also chosen to be on the U.S. Secretary of Commerce's National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This council gives advice on how to encourage new ideas and businesses.
In April 2018, Lila Ibrahim joined DeepMind as their first Chief Operating Officer. DeepMind is a leading company in artificial intelligence (AI) research.
In 2023, Lila Ibrahim, along with DeepMind founders Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, signed a statement from the Center for AI Safety. This statement said that reducing the risk of AI causing major problems, even extinction, should be a top global goal. It compared this risk to other big dangers like pandemics and nuclear war. According to Time magazine, one of Lila Ibrahim's jobs at DeepMind is to help manage these important risks related to AI.
