Lillis: A Glimpse into the Past
Lillis was situated about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) west of a town called Laton. It was located at an elevation of 253 feet (77 meters) above sea level. For many years, Lillis appeared on maps, showing its place in California's history. The last time it was officially shown on maps was in 1927.
How Lillis Got Its Name
The name "Lillis" was chosen to honor a man named Simon C. Lillis. He was a superintendent, which means he managed a large ranch in the area. Before it was called Lillis, the settlement had another name: Sans Tache.
The Story of the Lillis Post Office
Even though it was a small place, Lillis had its own post office! This post office started operating in 1890, helping people send and receive letters and packages. However, the post office only stayed open for ten years. In 1900, the mail service for the area was moved and transferred to the nearby town of Laton. This often happened when smaller communities changed or when services were centralized in bigger towns.
