Discovering Lillybanks: A Historic Home

What Makes Lillybanks Special?

Lillybanks was designed by an architect named John Scudder Adkins. The house looks like a style called Tudor Revival. This style was popular in the early 1900s and was inspired by old English homes from the Tudor period.

The house has two and a half stories. It sits on top of a hill and is surrounded by walls, which makes it feel private, just like many grand Tudor Revival houses. You can see many features of this style in Lillybanks. For example, it has a gabled roof, which means the roof has pointed sections. It also has fancy stonework and special windows with stone bars called mullions. There are also small windows built into the roof, called dormers. The house's overall shape is long and narrow.

Who Lived at Lillybanks?

Lillybanks was once the home of Philip and Bessie Swing. They came from a town called Batavia in Clermont County, Ohio. The Swing family had a history of important people in law.

Philip's father, Peter, was the son of Philip Bergen Swing. Philip Bergen Swing was a judge for a special court called the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Bessie's father, Allen Cowan, was also a local judge. Philip Swing himself worked as a lawyer in the courts of Hamilton County from 1894 until 1911.

A Protected Piece of History

In 1983, Lillybanks was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important because of their history or architecture. Lillybanks was added to this list because of its beautiful and historically significant architecture. Being on this list helps protect the house and its unique design for future generations.
