Lily McNair is an American academic leader. She was the president of Tuskegee University from 2018 to 2021. Tuskegee University is a famous historically black university in Tuskegee, Alabama.
About Lily McNair
Her Early Life and Schooling
Lily McNair grew up in New Jersey. She went to Princeton University and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1979. Psychology is the study of the mind and how people behave.
After Princeton, she continued her studies at Stony Brook University. There, she earned both her master's and doctoral degrees. During her time in school, she worked as a psychologist. She helped people at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and also at Stony Brook University.
Her Career in Education
After finishing her studies at Stony Brook University, Dr. McNair became a professor. She taught at the State University of New York at New Paltz. In 1992, she joined the University of Georgia. She became an Associate Professor of Psychology there. She was the first African-American woman to become a permanent professor in the Psychology Department. She also helped lead the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training program.
In 2004, Dr. McNair moved to Spelman College. She became the Associate Provost of Research. At Spelman, she worked with NASA on a special program. This program, called Women in Science and Engineering, helped more minority students get involved in science and technology. She also worked with the National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Her goal was to make Spelman College a top place for women of African descent.
Dr. McNair joined Wagner College in 2011. She became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. In this role, she helped hire many new teachers. She increased the number of diverse faculty by 116%. She also started an annual event for Black History Month. This event brought scholars together to share their knowledge. She is also a Trustee for Integration Charter Schools.
In July 2018, Dr. McNair was chosen to be the eighth President of Tuskegee University. She served as president until June 30, 2021.
