Linares is a city located in the state of Nuevo León, Mexico. It is the main city for the area around it, which is also called Linares. This region is known as the "orange belt" because many oranges are grown there.

In 2020, about 70,378 people lived in Linares. The city and its surrounding municipality are among the ten most populated places in Nuevo León. The municipality covers an area of about 2,445 square kilometers (944 square miles). It is located in the southeastern part of Nuevo León, right next to the state of Tamaulipas. The town of Hualahuises is completely surrounded by Linares municipality, like an island.

History of Linares

Linares was founded a long time ago, on April 2, 1712. It was started by a person named Sebastián Villegas Cumplido. The city was named to honor the person in charge of New Spain at that time. This person was Fernando de Alencastre Norona y Silva, who was the Duke of Linares in Spain.

Economy and Transport

Linares has a small area where different factories and businesses are located. This is called an industrial park. The city is also very well connected by highways. You can easily travel from Linares to Monterrey, which is a big city, and also to the Gulf of Mexico. Linares is also an important entry point to the southern part of the state of Nuevo León.

Culture and Arts

Linares has been featured in books and music. The 2015 novel El murmullo de las abejas (which means The Murmur of Bees) by Sofía Segovia is set in Linares and its nearby areas. Also, a famous norteño music band called Los Cadetes de Linares started here in the 1970s.
