Lincoln (tree) facts for kids
The Lincoln tree is a giant sequoia, which is a type of huge tree. You can find it in the Giant Forest area of Sequoia National Park in California. Many people believe it's the fourth largest tree in the entire world!
What Lincoln Looks Like
The Lincoln tree has a unique shape, especially at its bottom. It has some noticeable burn marks on its north, south, and west sides. You might also spot a small, white lump, called a burl, on its northeast side. The very top of the Lincoln tree looks a bit faded or bleached, and it has many big branches reaching out.
How Big is Lincoln?
Measuring giant trees like Lincoln can be tricky!
In 2002, a person named Wendell Flint wrote a book where he said the Lincoln tree had a volume of 44,471 cubic feet (1,259.3 m3). Volume helps us understand how much space the tree's trunk takes up.
However, an older measurement from the 1930s suggested the Lincoln tree was even bigger, with a volume of 51,000 cubic feet (1,400 m3). If this older number were used, Lincoln would be the second largest tree in the world, right after the famous General Sherman Tree!
Wendell Flint thought the older measurements might have included parts of the tree's base that he chose to leave out. Even so, he mentioned that including those parts would make the tree's volume closer to the older, larger number.
The widest part of the Lincoln tree at its base is about 36.4 feet across.
Here are some of its measurements:
Measurement | Metres | Feet |
---|---|---|
Height above base | 80.0 | 256.1 |
Circumference at ground | 30.1 | 98.5 |
Diameter 1.5 m above base | 7.5 | 24.6 |
Estimated trunk volume (m³.ft³) | 1,259.0 | 44,471.0 |
