The Lincoln Arboretum is a beautiful park in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. It covers about 22 acres (8.8 hectares) and is a great place to explore. The park has two ponds and many different kinds of trees.

A famous designer named Edward Milner created the park between 1870 and 1872. It is considered a very important historical park, listed as Grade II.

How the Park Started

In the 1800s, many towns started creating public parks for everyone to enjoy. Lincoln wanted one too! The nearby Temple Gardens, which were somewhat open to the public, were closing.

So, in 1870, the city passed a law called the Lincoln Commons Act. This allowed the city council to buy a piece of land called Monks Leys Common. This land was on the east side of the city.

The council also sold a small part of the land to build houses. The money from these sales helped pay for building and designing the Arboretum. This made it Lincoln's very first truly public park.

The Arboretum has a special building called a lodge at its west entrance on Monks Road. There are also three rows of houses next to the park on its western side. These are called Arboretum View, Monks Leys Terrace, and Woodland View.

Bringing the Arboretum Back to Life

The Lincoln Arboretum got a big makeover between 2002 and 2003. It reopened on September 19, 2003, after about £3 million was spent to make it look like its original design.

Many things were fixed and improved during this time:

  • The Abbey Lodge building was updated. It now has a community center and a tea room for visitors.
  • The old Victorian bandstand was repaired.
  • New railings that look like the old ones were put in.
  • A decorative iron structure called a folly was restored.
  • New paths were laid down for walking.
  • The gardens were refreshed, and many new plants were added.
  • A fun new hedge maze for children was built.
  • The main terrace area was resurfaced.
  • The ponds and bridges were cleaned and fixed.
  • Old stone steps were repaired and made stronger.
  • New lights were installed around the park.
  • Security cameras (CCTV) were put in for safety.
  • The children's play area was made new again.
  • A statue of a lion and two fountain features were restored.

Important Park Features

The entire park is listed as important, but five specific parts of the park are also listed as Grade II historical buildings. This means they are very special and need to be protected.

These important features include:

  • The Bandstand: This is a cast iron structure built in 1884.
  • The Telephone Kiosk: This is a classic red telephone box, a K6 type, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.
  • The Shelter: This is a cast-iron and sheet metal structure from the late 1800s. It was made by Lockerbie & Wilson from Birmingham.
  • The Lion Statue: This lion statue is bigger than life-size and was made in 1872 by Austin & Seeley.
  • The Cafe: This building used to be a gate lodge and a place to get refreshments. It was built in 1872 and was probably designed by Edward Milner.
