History of Lincoln Road
Long ago, most of Miami Beach was covered in mangroves. These are special trees that grow in salty water. In 1912, a man named Carl Fisher cleared a path through these mangroves. This path became Lincoln Road.
It quickly grew into an important social spot for the town. Carl Fisher even had his real estate office there. Over time, Lincoln Road became home to fancy stores. These included places like Bonwit Teller and Saks Fifth Avenue. There were also car dealerships for brands like Cadillac and Packard.
A New Design for the Road
In the 1950s, a famous architect named Morris Lapidus was asked to redesign Lincoln Road. Lapidus was known for designing big hotels in Miami Beach. He created the Fountainebleau and Eden Roc hotels.
Lapidus's plan for Lincoln Road was very modern and stylish. It included beautiful gardens, fountains, and even an outdoor theater. This design showed off the "MiMo" style, which stands for Miami Modern Architecture. Lapidus helped create this unique style in the 1950s.
Becoming a Pedestrian Mall
On November 28, 1960, Lincoln Road had its grand opening. It was closed to cars and became one of the first pedestrian malls in the country. People called it the "most magnificent mall in all of the Americas."
Today, Lincoln Road is still a very popular place. It has a modern movie theater and the cool 1111 Lincoln Road parking garage. You can also find the amazing New World Center concert hall there. Many businesses, like Viacom Latin America, have offices on Lincoln Road.
There are over 200 shops, local stores, and restaurants to explore. The newly fixed Colony Theatre hosts live shows. ArtCenter/South Florida has studios and galleries for artists. You can often see street performers entertaining visitors. Lincoln Road is a top spot for people visiting the South Beach area.
Expanding the Mall
In 2006, a plan was approved to make the pedestrian mall even longer. It was extended west to Alton Road. Raymond Jungles designed this new section in 2010. He used special plants and materials to create a beautiful "urban oasis."
In 2011, FIU opened a part of its School of Architecture on Lincoln Road. This campus has classrooms for students studying architecture, art, music, and theater.
On May 6, 2011, Lincoln Road Mall was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
