The Lincoln Street Historic District is a special neighborhood in Brunswick, Maine. It's like a time capsule! This historic area covers about 8 acres. It has fourteen old houses that look very similar. Most of these homes were built a long time ago, between 1843 and 1845. Because of its unique history, this district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

What Makes Lincoln Street Special?

Lincoln Street is a quiet street that runs east to west. It starts near Maine Street, which is the main road in downtown Brunswick. This street is special because of how it was planned.

How the Street Was Created

A professor named Dr. Isaac Lincoln owned the land here. He taught at Bowdoin College's Maine Medical School. People in Brunswick needed more homes. So, in 1843, Dr. Lincoln divided his land into many building lots. He sold most of them that year.

Dr. Lincoln made sure all the lots were the same size. He also set rules for how far back houses had to be built from the street. These rules helped make the street look very neat and organized. It shows how neighborhoods were built back then.

Houses on Lincoln Street

Lincoln Street is lined with houses on both sides. All the houses are between 1 and 2 stories tall. Some are made of wood, and others are made of brick. There are fourteen houses in total, with seven on each side. Four of these houses are duplexes, meaning two families can live in them.

Most of these homes were built between 1843 and 1845. They are built in a style called Greek Revival. This style was very popular back then. It often includes columns and simple, strong shapes.

One house on the street is much older, built in 1772. It was moved to Lincoln Street from Maine Street. It was later updated with a Colonial Revival look. Another house was built in 1871. It shows the Italianate style, which has decorative brackets and tall windows. Some of the older Greek Revival houses also have Italianate changes.

The Richardson House at 11 Lincoln Street is very famous. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's known as a great example of houses that mix Greek Revival and Italianate styles.
