Linda Beatrice Brown is an American writer and teacher. She was born in Akron, Ohio. She went to college in North Carolina at Bennett College. While there, she won awards for her writing. Linda Brown has written many books. Some of her books are Belles of Liberty, Black Angels, Crossing Over Jordan, and The Long Walk. She writes different kinds of stories, like fiction (made-up stories), nonfiction (true stories), plays, and poems. Many of her writings are about the Civil Rights Movement. They also talk about the struggles that came from slavery during the American Civil War.

Her Early Life and Education

Linda Brown was born in Ohio. Her parents were Raymond R. Brown and Edith Player Brown. She moved to North Carolina to go to college. She studied at Bennett College. Her aunt, Willa Beatrice Player, was the president of the college at that time. Linda Brown studied English and French. She was the top student in her graduating class at Bennett College.

After college, she went to graduate school. She earned her master's degree from Case Western Reserve University. Later, she moved back to Ohio. She received her PhD (a very high degree) in African American Literature and Creative Writing from Union Institute and University.

Her Career as a Teacher and Writer

Linda Brown has taught at different schools and universities. These include Kent State University and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She also taught at Guilford College.

Today, she is a special professor at Bennett College for Women. Her title is the Willa B. Player Distinguished Professor of the Humanities. She teaches African American literature there.

Awards and Honors

Linda Brown has received several awards for her writing. These awards were given to her while she was in North Carolina. Some of her awards include:

  • 2nd place in a Creative Writing Contest at her college.
  • 1st place in fiction writing from the NC Coalition of the Arts.
  • A special residency at the Headlands Center, which means she got time and space to focus on her writing.
