Linda J. Saif is an American scientist who studies tiny living things called microbes. She works at Ohio State University. In 2015, she made history as the first woman to win the Wolf Prize in Agriculture. This award recognized her amazing work studying virology (viruses) and immunology (how our bodies fight off sickness).
Dr. Saif is also a Fulbright scholar, which means she received a special award to study and teach abroad. She is part of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of top scientists in the United States. In 2017, she joined the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) for her clever discoveries. Back in 2003, she worked with the World Health Organization to study the SARS coronavirus outbreak, a serious illness that spread around the world.
Dr. Saif is married to Dr. Mo Saif, who is also an immunologist. He used to teach and lead research programs at The Ohio State University, focusing on animal health.
Early Life and Education
Linda Saif grew up in Ohio. She learned about farming and animals early on by spending time at her grandparents' farm. In 1965, she started college at the College of Wooster. She studied biology and graduated with honors in 1969.
After a short time at Case Western Reserve University, she went to Ohio State University in 1970. There, she earned her Master of Science degree in Microbiology and Immunology. She then continued her studies at Ohio State University, completing her PhD in 1976.
