Linden Flats was an old apartment building in downtown Davenport, Iowa. It was built in 1900 and was considered an important historical building. It was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Sadly, a big fire in 2005 destroyed the building, and it had to be torn down.

A Look Back: The Story of Linden Flats

The Linden Flats building was constructed in 1900. It was located in a part of Davenport where many German families lived. At that time, many large apartment buildings were being built in the city. Linden Flats was one of these.

Many similar apartment buildings in this area have since been torn down. Linden Flats continued to be an apartment building for over 100 years. However, on October 16, 2005, a fire broke out. The roof of the building collapsed, and it was badly damaged. Because of the fire, the building later had to be torn down.

What Did It Look Like?

Linden Flats was a three-story building made of brick. It stood on a strong stone foundation. The front of the building, called the façade, mixed two different styles of architecture:

  • Victorian style: This style added fancy decorations. You could see it in the two window sections that went all the way up to the roof. It also had a cool two-toned brick pattern and special brackets. There were even decorative garland swags on the roof's edge, called the cornice.
  • Federal style: This style was simpler and more balanced. It showed up in the building's basic box shape. The windows were plain, and the stone columns and tops of the doorways were simple. The whole building looked very even and symmetrical.
