Early Life and Education
Lindsey White was born in 1980 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She studied art at two different colleges. First, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. Later, she received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the California College of Art in San Francisco, California.
Exploring Art Through Different Mediums
Lindsey White's art often combines humor and magic to make everyday things seem surprising. She uses video, photography, and sculpture to create scenes that are like visual jokes. Her work challenges how we usually see things by showing us what's unexpected or even impossible. It's like a good joke, where something silly or cartoon-like happens in a normal setting. Her art often turns an awkward moment into a funny situation.
She has shown her art in many places, including:
- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in San Francisco, CA
- Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, CA
- Museum Bärengasse in Switzerland
- Bolinas Art Museum in Bolinas, California
- Marylhurst Art Gym in Portland, Oregon
- San Francisco International Airport Museum in San Francisco, California
- diRosa in Napa Valley, California
- ACME. in Los Angeles, California
- San Francisco Arts Commission in San Francisco, California
- Aurora Picture Show in Houston, Texas
Creative Collaborations
Lindsey White is also part of a group called Will Brown. She works with David Kasprzak and Jordan Stein in this project. Together, they rethink how artists and curators (people who organize art shows) usually work. They create unique exhibitions that often explore forgotten or surprising stories from art and culture. Their work has been called "meta-curating," which means they curate in a way that makes you think about the act of curating itself.
For example, they once created an art show inspired by the true story of a famous painter's burial site in Moscow. They turned their San Francisco art space into a fancy Russian apartment for this project. Will Brown has worked with many art organizations, including the Wattis Institute, Kadist Foundation, Ulrich Museum of Art, di Rosa, and Headlands Center of the Arts. In 2015, they had a special exhibition at the Berkeley Museum of Art/Pacific Film Archive. They also received a grant in partnership with the San Francisco Art Institute in 2015.
Teaching Art
Currently, Lindsey White is an Assistant Professor of Photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. She teaches students how to create art using photography.
