History of Linwood
Early Settlers and Growth
The first people to settle in Linwood were Joseph Durst and his wife, Delilah. They arrived sometime before 1832.
Another small community called Lockranzie was located nearby. But in 1851, the post office moved from Lockranzie to Linwood.
Linwood was planned out by James H. Durst and Ann Harrison Terrell. They hoped it would become a busy port along the Angelina River. However, boats couldn't use the river as much as they hoped, so the idea of a river port didn't work out.
Even so, Linwood grew quite a bit. In the 1850s, Charles Chevallier, Henry Raguet, and his brother Charles moved to Linwood from Nacogdoches. They opened stores, which helped the community develop. Other early families included R.W. Mitchell and the Terrell family.
Changes and Decline
In the early 1880s, a new railroad line, the Kansas and Gulf Short Line Railroad, was built. This railroad did not go through Linwood. Instead, it bypassed the community.
Because of this, many businesses and people moved from Linwood to a nearby town called Alto. Alto was on the new railroad line, which made it easier for businesses to transport goods.
The post office in Linwood closed in 1903. By 1936, the community had only two businesses, a church, and about ten residents. The last businesses eventually closed. However, the population increased to 40 people between 1990 and 2000.
Where Linwood is Located
