The Linzer Stadion was a famous sports stadium in Linz, Austria. It was a place where many different events happened. The stadium first opened its doors in 1952. It was updated in 2012 to hold over 21,000 people. These updates added special "rail seats" for fans to stand safely during games. The stadium was a big part of Linz's history for many years.

A Look Back: Stadium History

When Linzer Stadion Opened

The Linzer Stadion officially opened on July 28, 1952. It was built on the land where an old brick factory used to be. People often called the stadium "Auf der Gugl." This was because it sat on a hill named Gugl in Linz.

Sports Played at the Stadium

For many years, the stadium also hosted exciting motorcycle speedway races. These races continued until the early 1970s. In 1961, it even held a qualifying round for the Speedway World Championship.

The stadium was mostly known for association football matches. It was the home ground for FC Blau-Weiß Linz. It also hosted the most important games for LASK Linz. Many thrilling football moments happened here.

The Stadium's Final Years

In July 2020, the LASK football club shared plans for a new stadium. This new stadium was to be built right where the old Linzer Stadion stood. Construction began in early 2021. The new stadium was finished in February 2023. The Linzer Stadion closed its doors in 2021 to make way for this modern new home for football.

Music and Shows: Concerts at the Stadium

The Linzer Stadion wasn't just for sports. It also hosted many big music concerts over the years. Famous bands and singers performed for thousands of fans.

  • Pink Floyd played a show here on June 23, 1989. This was part of their "A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour."
  • The band Genesis performed at the stadium on June 19, 2007. This concert was part of their "Turn It On Again: The Tour."
  • The singer Pink performed on July 8, 2010. Her show was part of "The Funhouse Summer Carnival."
  • Bon Jovi rocked the stadium on May 15, 2006. This was during their "Have a Nice Day Tour."
  • Michael Jackson performed a huge concert on September 6, 1988. About 40,000 people came to see him during his "Bad World Tour."
