Lionel Godfrey Pearson (born 29 October 1879 – died 19 March 1953) was a talented British architect. He is most famous for designing the Royal Artillery Memorial in London. He worked on this important monument with a sculptor named Charles Sargeant Jagger.

Early Life and Training

Lionel Pearson went to school at Manchester Grammar School. After that, he trained to become an architect in Liverpool. Later, he moved to London to start his career.

In London, he worked with other architects. From 1901, he worked with Edward Schroeder Prior. Later, starting in 1913, he joined a partnership with Henry Percy Adams and Charles Holden.

Service During World War I

During the First World War, Lionel Pearson served his country. He was part of the Royal Army Medical Corps. This group helped care for soldiers who were injured or sick.

Famous Buildings He Designed

Lionel Pearson designed several important buildings. One of his notable works is the Sandham Memorial Chapel. This chapel was built to honor soldiers who died in the First World War. The famous artist Stanley Spencer painted many pictures inside it.

Pearson also designed many hospitals. Some of these include:

  • The new Westminster Hospital (completed in 1939)
  • The Royal Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital (built in 1928)
  • Southend Hospital (finished in 1932)
  • The Mineral Water Hospital in Bath

Personal Life

In 1932, Lionel Pearson married Melinda Elizabeth Osborne. He passed away in 1953. His life and work were remembered in The Times newspaper shortly after his death.
