Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Earl of Dysart (born January 30, 1649 – died February 23, 1727) was an important British nobleman and politician. He was known as Lord Huntingtower before he became the Earl of Dysart. He was a member of the Tory political party.

Who Was Lionel Tollemache?

Lionel Tollemache was the son of Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Baronet and Elizabeth, 2nd Countess of Dysart. He studied at Queens' College, Cambridge. When his father passed away, Lionel inherited his title as a Baronet. He also inherited some debts, which made him very careful with money for the rest of his life.

His Time in Parliament

In 1673, Lionel tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Suffolk. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the country's government. He lost the election, but the local official helped him get a seat in Parliament anyway. Later, a court decided that the other candidate should have won.

Lionel also served as an MP for Orford in 1679. He was part of a special Parliament called the Habeas Corpus Parliament. In 1685, he was elected for Orford again. He also held a local position in Orford called "portman" for many years.

After King James II left the throne, Lionel was out of Parliament for a while. But he returned as an MP for Suffolk in 1698. He usually supported the ideas of the Tory party.

Family Life

On September 30, 1680, Lionel Tollemache married Grace Wilbraham. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Wilbraham, 3rd Baronet. They had five children together:

  • Lionel Tollemache, Lord Huntingtower (1682–1712)
  • Lady Elizabeth Tollemache (died 1746)
    • She married Sir Robert Salusbury Cotton, 3rd Baronet.
  • Lady Catherine Tollemache (died 1754)
    • She married John Brydges, Marquess of Carnarvon.
  • Lady Mary Tollemache (died 1715)
  • Lady Grace Tollemache (died 1719)

Important Roles and Titles

In 1698, Lionel became the Earl of Dysart after his mother passed away. This was a very important noble title.

He took on several other important roles:

  • In 1702, he became the Vice-Admiral of Suffolk. This was a local naval position.
  • He also became a "freeman" of Dunwich, which gave him certain rights in that town.
  • In 1703, he was made Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. This meant he was the King's representative in the county.
  • He also became the High Steward of Ipswich, another important local leadership role.

As Lord Lieutenant, he made changes to who held local government jobs. He was also the Mayor of Orford in 1704. He supported a certain law that led to him being removed from some of his county jobs in 1705.

Because he was a Scottish noble, he had to leave the House of Commons after the Acts of Union 1707. These Acts joined the kingdoms of England and Scotland. Queen Anne offered him a new noble title in Great Britain, but he said no.

Later Life and Legacy

Lionel's only son passed away in 1712, before him. Lionel Tollemache remained a Tory supporter until his death in 1727. His grandson, also named Lionel, inherited his titles.
