Lipochaeta, often called nehe, is a group of flowering plants. These plants belong to the daisy family, known as Asteraceae. All Lipochaeta plants are special because they are endemic to Hawaii. This means they grow naturally only in Hawaii and nowhere else in the world.

Understanding Plant Families: Taxonomy

Scientists group living things into categories. This system is called taxonomy. It helps us understand how different plants and animals are related. For Lipochaeta, figuring out its exact place in the plant family tree has been a bit tricky. Scientists have done many studies to understand its relationships with other plants.

Different Types of Lipochaeta Plants

Within the Lipochaeta group, there are several different species. Each species has its own unique features. Here are some examples of Lipochaeta species:

  • Lipochaeta connata – Also known as Nehe
  • Lipochaeta degeneri – Called Molokai nehe
  • Lipochaeta heterophylla – Known as Lavaflow nehe
  • Lipochaeta lobata – Often called Shrubland nehe
    • Lipochaeta lobata var. leptophylla
    • Lipochaeta lobata var. lobata
  • Lipochaeta rockii – Rock's nehe
  • Lipochaeta succulenta – Known as Seaside nehe
