Lisa Rene Shanti Hanna (born 20 August 1975) is a Jamaican politician and former beauty queen. She became famous after being crowned Miss World 1993. She was the third person from Jamaica to win this international title.

Lisa Hanna is a member of the People's National Party. She currently serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Saint Ann South East. From 2012 to 2016, she was Jamaica's Minister of Youth and Culture. In 2020, she ran to become the leader of her party but was not successful.

Education and Early Life

Lisa Hanna attended Immaculate Preparatory School and then the Queen's School, Jamaica. At Queen's School, she was the Head-girl, which is like a student leader. The United Nations Development Programme also named her a Goodwill Ambassador. This means she helped promote good causes.

She continued her studies at the University of the West Indies. There, she earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Communications.

On November 27, 1993, Lisa Hanna won the Miss World 1993 Pageant. This big event took place in South Africa.

Later, in 1998, she acted in a romantic comedy movie called How Stella Got Her Groove Back. In 2003, Lisa Hanna also worked in television. She hosted a Jamaican talk show called Our Voices. She was also a guest presenter on the US TV show Xtra. A year later, she returned to Jamaica. She worked as a communications consultant for the Hilton Hotel in New Kingston.

In Jamaican Politics

In the 2007 general election, Lisa Hanna became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected by the people to represent their area in the country's government. She won the seat for St. Ann South East. This made her one of the youngest women ever elected to the Jamaican Parliament.

Before 2011, she spoke for her party on matters of Information, Youth, and Culture. In December 2011, her party won the election. She was then appointed as the Minister of Youth and Culture.

As Minister, Lisa Hanna worked on many important projects. She helped create the National Youth Policy 2015–2030. This plan aimed to help young people by working with different groups. These groups included government, businesses, and youth organizations.

Her ministry also improved the National Foster Care programme. This program helps place children who need care with loving families. Over 855 children were placed with 800 families.

The Ananda Alert System was also made stronger under her leadership. This system helps find missing children. In August 2013, it helped safely return 85% of missing children to their homes.

In 2016, Lisa Hanna shared her ideas for helping Jamaican children. She spoke at a UNICEF conference in New York City. That same year, Jamaica's ranking on the UNICEF Kids Rights Index improved greatly. It moved up 52 places to 51st out of 163 countries.

In 2015, she successfully worked to have Jamaica’s Blue and John Crow Mountains recognized. They were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site for Jamaica and the Caribbean.

In 2020, she ran for the leadership of her party. She was defeated by Mark Golding. In August 2022, she announced that she would not run in the next general election.

Personal Life

Lisa Hanna was born in Retreat, St. Mary Parish. Her father, Rene Hanna, is of Lebanese descent. Her mother, Dorothy Hosang, has African and Chinese roots.

In 1999, Lisa Hanna married David K. Panton in New York City. They had a son named Alexander in March 2001. They later divorced in 2004. In December 2017, Lisa Hanna married Jamaican businessman Richard Lake. Together, they run a business called Lydford Logistics.
