Lisa Anne Jardine (born Bronowski; 12 April 1944 – 25 October 2015) was an important British historian. She studied the "early modern period," which is a time in history from about 1500 to 1800.

From 1990 to 2011, she was a special professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London. She also directed a research center there. Later, from 2008 to 2014, she was the Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). This group helps regulate things like fertility treatments in the UK. In 2012, she moved to University College London (UCL) to start a new research center for humanities.

Early Life and Education

Lisa Jardine was born on 12 April 1944 in Oxford, England. She was the oldest of four daughters. Her father was Jacob Bronowski, a famous mathematician and thinker. Her mother, Rita Coblentz, was a sculptor.

Her father was well-known for his TV series called The Ascent of Man. Lisa later gave a talk about him, sharing things she learned about her father.

Lisa loved reading and history from a young age. She earned a scholarship to Cheltenham Ladies' College for math. She then studied at Newnham College, Cambridge and the University of Essex. At Cambridge, she first studied math, but later switched to English. She also learned eight languages, including Greek and Latin. She earned her PhD from Cambridge University. Her research was about the famous thinker Francis Bacon.

In 1969, she married Nicholas Jardine, a historian. She used his last name, which she kept even after they separated. She later married John Hare in 1982. Lisa Jardine had three children, and she often said that raising them was her greatest achievement.

Lisa Jardine was a professor of Renaissance studies at Queen Mary University of London. She led two important research centers there. She was also a member of the Royal Historical Society.

She helped many important organizations. For example, she was a trustee for the Victoria and Albert Museum for eight years. She also advised the Royal Society on its collections. From 2008 to 2014, she led the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). This is the UK government group that regulates assisted reproduction. In 2011, she became a Director of The National Archives.

Lisa Jardine wrote many books and articles. She wrote for both academic experts and general readers. Some of her famous books include The Curious Life of Robert Hooke and On a Grander Scale: the Outstanding Career of Sir Christopher Wren. These books were about important scientists and architects. Her book Going Dutch won a major history prize in 2009. This book explored how England and the Netherlands influenced each other in the 1600s.

She also wrote and spoke a lot for the media. She was a regular voice on BBC Radio 4's "A Point of View." She also judged many book awards, including the Man Booker Prize.
