Her Books and Research
Lisbeth Haas has written important books that help us understand California's past.
Conquests and Historical Identities
In 1996, she published a book called Conquests and Historical Identities in California, 1769-1936. This book looks at California's history and how different groups of people formed their identities. It covers the time from when Spain first colonized California until the early 1900s. The book especially focuses on the identity of Chicano people in the San Juan Capistrano and Santa Ana areas of Orange County.
Saints and Citizens
Later, in 2012, she released another book titled Saints and Citizens: Indigenous Histories of Colonial Missions and Mexican California. For this book, she studied old paintings made by Native Americans at different missions in California. She showed how these native artists included their own cultural symbols in the mission paintings. Her work helps us see how Native American leaders used new knowledge to guide their communities during those times.
