Early Life and Education

Lise Thiry was born in Liège, Belgium, on February 5, 1921. Her father, Marcel Thiry, was a famous French poet.

In 1940, Lise started studying medicine at the University of Liège. She was one of only three girls in her class! She worked very hard and finished her studies in 1946.

Career and Research

After graduating, Lise Thiry began her research at the Pasteur Institute in Brussels. This is a famous place where scientists study diseases.

In 1951, she started a special department there. This department focused on virology, which is the study of viruses. Lise Thiry became very important in understanding viruses. She even helped create a way to test for the AIDS virus, also known as HIV. This was a huge step in fighting the disease.

Life as a Politician

Lise Thiry was not only a scientist; she was also a politician. In 1990, she became a senator in Belgium. This meant she helped make laws for her country.

She cared a lot about people who were seeking safety in Belgium. In 2002, she wrote a book called Conversations with the Clandestine Ones. This book helped people understand the challenges faced by asylum seekers.

Lise Thiry lived a very long and full life. She turned 100 years old in February 2021. She passed away on January 16, 2024, when she was 102 years old.

Awards and Honours

Lise Thiry received many awards for her important work:

  • In 1990, she was named "Woman of the Year."
  • In 2001, she received the Walloon Merit at the rank of Commander. This is a special honour from the Walloon region of Belgium.
  • In 2007, a special stamp was made in her honour. It showed her picture along with an image of the AIDS virus, highlighting her work.
