Lisette Anna Kohlhagen (born December 20, 1890 – died February 2, 1969) was a talented artist from South Australia. She was known for her paintings and her active role in the art world.

Early Life and Education

Lisette Kohlhagen was born in Kilkerran, a place near Maitland, South Australia, on the Yorke Peninsula. She was the youngest child in her family.

She loved art from a young age. Lisette studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts in Adelaide. Her teachers included James Ashton. In 1926, she won an award from the Royal Drawing Society. Another student, Ivor Hele, also won an award that year.

Travels and Further Study

In 1927, Lisette and her sister Emma Adeline went on a trip. They visited art galleries across Britain and Europe. This trip gave Lisette a great chance to learn more about art. She also studied with Gratton Cooke at the Royal Drawing Society.

Later, she continued her art education. In 1935, she studied oil painting in Sydney with Adelaide Perry. Around 1937 and 1938, she attended George Bell's School in Melbourne.

Involvement in the Art Community

Lisette Kohlhagen was very involved in the art world. She was a longtime member of the South Australian Society of Arts. She even served as their secretary from 1947 to 1954.

She was also part of a group of artists called "Group 9." This group included other well-known artists like Dorrit Black and John Dowie.

Supporting the Arts

Lisette helped start the South Australian branch of the Contemporary Art Society. This society supports new and modern art. She also wrote about art for the Adelaide newspaper, News.

She volunteered her time at the Art Gallery of South Australia. There, she worked as a guide and gave talks about art. Lisette also supported the Liberal and Country League, a political party, by donating some of her artwork.

Legacy

Lisette Anna Kohlhagen's contributions to art are still remembered. A place in Canberra, called Kohlhagen Place, is named in her honour. It is located in the suburb of Conder.
