James Ashton moved to Adelaide, Australia, in 1884 to become a full-time artist. In 1886, he opened his own art school in Norwood. This school helped many people learn how to paint.

In 1894, he visited England again. He studied with a famous painter named Henry Moore for three months. While there, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society of Arts. This was a big honor for an artist.

Teaching Art in South Australia

When he returned to Adelaide in 1895, Ashton started the Academy of Arts. For over 30 years, he was one of the most well-known painting teachers in South Australia. Many of his students became famous artists themselves. Some of his notable students included Hans Heysen, Hayley Lever, and his own son, Will Ashton.

Ashton also taught art at Prince Alfred College for almost 40 years. He was very generous and gave his art collection and library to the school. He was also a leader in the art community. He served as president of the South Australian Society of Arts for four years. He also helped start and lead the Adelaide Easel Club.

James Ashton passed away in Adelaide in 1935. He was survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. His son, Sir John William Ashton, followed in his father's footsteps. He became a very well-known artist and later became the director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney in 1936.
