This article is about African American newspapers that were published in Utah. These newspapers were important for sharing news and ideas within the Black community. They helped people stay connected and informed.

Many of Utah's early African American newspapers started between 1890 and 1910. This was a time when more Black people moved to Utah. By 1910, about 1,144 African Americans lived there. The first newspapers for this community, The Broad Ax and the Utah Plain Dealer, both began in 1895. Other papers soon followed. Many of these early local papers were part of the Western Negro Press Association. This group held a big meeting in Salt Lake City in 1900. The Plain Dealer was one of the longest-running early papers. It was published for over ten years, from 1895 to 1909.

The Broad Ax

The Broad Ax was a weekly newspaper. It started in Salt Lake City in 1895. Julius F. Taylor was its editor. The paper was published until 1899 in Utah. It then moved to Chicago. It continued to be a Chicago paper until 1931. You can find some old issues of The Broad Ax online.

The Utah Plain Dealer

The Utah Plain Dealer was another important weekly paper. It also began in Salt Lake City in 1895. James Finley Wilson and William W. Taylor started this newspaper. It ran for a long time, until 1909. This made it one of the longest-lasting early Black newspapers in Utah.

Ogden's Early Papers

The Ogden Eagle was the first African American newspaper in Ogden, Utah. It was published weekly or twice a month from 1946 to 1947. Another paper, the Intermountain Voice, was published in Ogden from 1949 to 1951.

Other Newspapers in Utah

Many other African American newspapers were published in Utah over the years. They helped share local news and opinions.

  • The Advisory: This was a quarterly newspaper. It started in Salt Lake City in 1992.
  • Democratic Headlight: This weekly paper was published in Salt Lake City in 1899. J. Gordon McPherson was its editor.
  • Tri-City Oracle: This weekly paper was published in Salt Lake City from 1902 to 1903. Rev. James W. Washington published it.
  • Town Talk: This paper was published in Salt Lake City sometime between 1890 and 1910. Willis P. Hough was its editor.
  • Western Recorder: This weekly paper was published in Salt Lake City in 1897 by S.P. Chambers.
  • Wordpower: This was a biweekly (every two weeks) newspaper. It was published in Salt Lake City from 1970 to 1972. It was a free paper, supported by ads.
  • Central Worker / Central City Worker: This biweekly paper was published in Salt Lake City from 1971 to 1972. It was also a free paper, supported by donations.
  • The Mountain West Minority Reporter and Sentinel: This bimonthly (every two months) newspaper started in West Valley City, Utah in 1990. It called itself "The voice of Black America in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon & Colorado."
