Bluey is a popular Australian cartoon show for young kids. It first aired on ABC Kids on October 1, 2018. The show was created by Joe Brumm and made by Ludo Studio in Queensland, Australia.
The series is about Bluey, a fun-loving six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy. She is full of energy, imagination, and loves to explore the world. Bluey lives with her dad, Bandit, her mom, Chilli, and her younger sister, Bingo. Bluey and Bingo often go on amazing adventures together through their imaginative play.
Other characters in the show are also different dog breeds. Some of these characters were inspired by dogs Joe Brumm knew as a child. The main ideas in Bluey include the importance of a supportive family, Australian culture, and how much play helps kids grow. The show is set in Brisbane, Queensland, which is the capital city of the state.
Bluey was created by both the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the British Broadcasting Corporation. BBC Studios handles the show's worldwide distribution and merchandise. In 2019, Disney got the rights to broadcast Bluey internationally.
Since it started in October 2018, Bluey has aired 154 episodes across three series. There have been special episodes for Christmas ("Verandah Santa" and "Christmas Swim") and Easter ("Easter"). The third series also included a Father's Day episode ("Perfect") and a longer 28-minute episode called "The Sign". Short "Minisodes," lasting one to three minutes, were released throughout 2024. A Bluey movie was announced on December 18, 2024, and is planned for release worldwide in 2027. Brumm announced this film would be his final writing credit for the show.
Many episodes of Bluey have won awards or received praise. Richard Jeffery won an Australian Directors' Guild Award in 2021 for directing the episode "Sleepytime." This episode also won a big international award in 2022. The music for Bluey, composed by Joff Bush, has been nominated for APRA Screen Music Awards. Episodes like "Teasing" and "Flat Pack" were recognized for their great music. The episode "Cricket" was highly praised by sports writers.
Some Bluey episodes have even been turned into picture books. "The Beach" book won awards in 2020 for Book of the Year and Children's Picture Book of the Year. You can also find Bluey episodes on DVD in Australia, released by BBC Studios.
