Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Doraemon is a super popular Japanese manga series for children. It was created by a talented artist named Fujiko F. Fujio. The story first appeared in different kids' magazines in December 1969.

There are more than 1300 short adventures of Doraemon! A big part of these, 821 episodes, were collected into special books called tankōbon by a company called Shogakukan. These books were released under their Tentoumusi comics (てんとう虫コミックス) brand. The very first book came out on July 31, 1974, and the last one, volume 45, was published on April 26, 1996.

The series is all about a friendly robot cat named Doraemon. He travels back in time from the 22nd century to help a young boy named Nobita Nobi (野比 のび太, Nobi Nobita). Doraemon uses cool gadgets from his future pocket to solve Nobita's problems, which often leads to funny and exciting situations!

Between 2013 and 2016, the first 200 volumes of Doraemon were translated into English and released in North America. You could even read them digitally in full color on Amazon Kindle!

You can find the Doraemon manga in full color in English on Amazon Kindle in North America. By October 16, 2016, a total of 200 volumes were available. These are longer adventures, like mini-movies in book form!

The same English translation of the Doraemon manga is also printed as physical books by Shogakukan Asia. But unlike the Kindle versions, these printed books are in black and white.

Books in Two Languages

There have been two series of Doraemon books that are bilingual, meaning they have both Japanese and English text. These were published by SHOGAKUKAN ENGLISH COMICS and called "Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future." They even had audio versions to help you learn!

The first series of bilingual books came out between 2002 and 2005, with 10 volumes. A box set of these first 10 volumes was released on March 28, 2006.

These bilingual books were also translated and published in other countries like Taiwan, Thailand, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam.

A second series of bilingual books was released between 2013 and 2014. These were special collections based on different themes:

  • A Selection of Touching Stories: October 18, 2013.
  • A Selection of Comic Stories: December 18, 2013.
  • A Selection of Love Stories: February 18, 2014.
  • A Selection of Witty Stories: April 18, 2014.
  • A Selection of Scary Stories: June 18, 2014.
  • A Selection of Fantastic Stories: August 18, 2014.

There were also audio versions released in April and May 2009.

Exploring the Doraemon Short Stories

The Doraemon manga has many short, fun episodes. The Kindle Edition (KE) in English includes almost all of these short stories. It has 200 volumes and a total of 1311 episodes! The original black and white drawings were even digitally colored for these versions.

When you look at lists of Doraemon episodes, you might see some abbreviations:

  • TC stands for Tentōmushi Comics (てんとう虫コミックス). These are the main 45 volumes.
  • DP means Doraemon Plus (ドラえもんプラス). These are extra volumes with more stories.
  • DCW refers to Doraemon Color Works (ドラえもんカラー作品集). These are collections of colored stories.
  • CWF means The Complete Works of Fujiko F. Fujio (藤子・F・不二雄大全集) Doraemon. This is a huge collection of all of Fujiko F. Fujio's works, including Doraemon stories not found in other books.

The "First Release" column tells you the year an episode first appeared. The "Rel. #" is the release number, showing the order they came out.

Doraemon Plus is another series of tankōbon books. It's not a new story, but a collection of 125 episodes that weren't included in the main 45 Tentōmushi Comics volumes. There are 6 volumes in this series. All the episodes from Doraemon Plus are also included in the English Kindle Edition.
