What are Listed Buildings?

In Northern Ireland, a "listed building" is a building or structure that is officially marked as having "special architectural or historic interest." This means it's either designed in a unique way or has an important story from the past.

There are different levels of listed buildings. Grade B+ buildings are very special. They are almost as important as Grade A buildings. Sometimes, a Grade B+ building has a small part that isn't perfect. Or, it might have amazing rooms inside or a beautiful setting. These things make it stand out from other buildings.

How Buildings Get Listed

Listing buildings started later in Northern Ireland than in other parts of the UK. The first rules for listing came out in 1972. Today, the rules are from the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991.

The Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland makes lists of these special buildings. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) is in charge of this process. They decide which buildings are important enough to be listed.

Finding Special Buildings

A big search for Northern Ireland's buildings began in 1974. This was called the First Survey. It finished in 1994. By then, the way buildings were listed had improved a lot. So, they started a Second Survey to update all the information.

As of April 2010, the Second Survey was done for many areas. They expected to finish it by 2016. All the information about listed and unlisted buildings goes into a public database. The NIEA uses special rules to decide if a building should be listed.

What Happens When a Building is Listed?

Once a building is listed, you can't change it easily. There are strict rules about changing its structure or its parts. If you want to make any changes, you must get permission first. This permission is called "listed building consent." You get it from your local council.

There are about 8,500 listed buildings in Northern Ireland. This is about 2% of all buildings. Around 580 of these are Grade B+.
