List of S-phrases facts for kids
S-phrases were special safety messages used on labels of dangerous chemicals in the European Union. Think of them as important warnings that told people how to handle these substances safely and what to do if something went wrong.
These phrases were part of a set of rules called Directive 67/548/EEC - Dangerous Substances Directive. Over time, this list was updated and translated into many European languages.
However, on June 1, 2015, these S-phrases were replaced. A new, worldwide system called the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 - Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulations took over. This new system, based on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) by the United Nations, aims to make chemical safety warnings the same all over the world. The new safety messages are called GHS precautionary statements.
Understanding Safety Phrases
Imagine you have a bottle of cleaning product. On its label, you might see codes like "S2" or "S24/25". These codes are short ways to give you important safety advice. They tell you things like "Keep out of the reach of children" or "Avoid contact with skin and eyes."
These phrases were designed to help everyone, from factory workers to people at home, understand the risks of chemicals and how to stay safe. Even though they've been replaced by a newer system, understanding what they meant helps us appreciate how important clear safety warnings are.
