What Were the USCT?
The USCT were regiments (groups of soldiers) made up mostly of African American men. Many of these men were formerly enslaved people who had escaped to freedom. Others were free African Americans from both the North and South. They joined the Union Army to fight for their freedom and the freedom of others.
At first, African American soldiers were not allowed to fight in the war. But as the war continued, the Union needed more soldiers. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This statement declared that enslaved people in Confederate states were free. It also allowed African American men to officially join the Union Army.
More than 175,000 African American men served in the USCT. They made up about 10% of the entire Union Army. These soldiers faced many challenges. They often received less pay than white soldiers and faced discrimination. Despite this, they showed incredible courage and determination.
Fighting for Freedom
USCT soldiers fought in many important battles across the country. They proved their bravery and skill in combat. One famous example is the Battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina. Here, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, a USCT unit, led a heroic but costly attack. Their actions showed everyone that African American soldiers were just as capable and brave as any other soldiers.
They also fought in battles like the Siege of Petersburg and the Battle of Nashville. Their contributions were vital to the Union's success. By fighting, they not only helped win the war but also showed the world their right to be free and equal citizens.
