Utah became a part of the Union on January 4, 1896. Since then, people in Utah have voted for their U.S. Senators. These senators represent Utah in the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C.

Currently, Utah is represented by two Republican senators: Mike Lee and Mitt Romney. One of Utah's most well-known senators was Orrin Hatch, who served for a very long time, from 1977 to 2019. He was Utah's longest-serving senator. Interestingly, Utah is one of a few states where the "senior" senator (who has served longer) is younger than the "junior" senator (who has served for less time).

What is a U.S. Senator?

A U.S. Senator is a person elected by the people of their state to represent them in the United States Senate. The Senate is one of two parts of the U.S. Congress, which makes laws for the whole country. Each state, no matter how big or small, has two senators. Senators serve six-year terms.

How Utah's Senators are Chosen

Senators are elected in different "classes." This means that not all senators are up for election at the same time. This helps keep the Senate stable.

Class 1 Senators

Senators in Class 1 are part of an election group that recently had elections in 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2018. The next time people will vote for a Class 1 senator from Utah will be in 2024.

Class 3 Senators

Senators in Class 3 are part of another election group. Their recent elections were in 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2022. The next election for a Class 3 senator from Utah will be in 2028.

A Look Back at Utah's Senators

When Utah first became a state in 1896, it took a little while to elect its first senators. The first two senators elected from Utah were Frank J. Cannon and Arthur Brown. Over the years, many different people have served Utah in the Senate, helping to shape laws and represent the state's interests in Washington, D.C.
