Old and Famous Bridges

Some bridges in Azerbaijan are very old and have a lot of history. They were built many centuries ago and are still standing today!

The Red Bridge

The Red Bridge, or Qırmızı Körpü in Azerbaijani, is a very old and important bridge. It was built in the 12th century, which means it's over 800 years old! This bridge is special because it connects Azerbaijan and Georgia. It's 175 meters (about 574 feet) long and has four big arches made of stone. People used to walk across this bridge over the Khrami river.

Khudafarin Bridges

There are two famous Khudafarin Bridges that cross the Aras River. They are also very old and connect Azerbaijan with Iran.

  • 15-span Khudafarin Bridge: This bridge was built in the 12th century, just like the Red Bridge. It's 200 meters (about 656 feet) long and has 15 stone arches. It was used as a footbridge.
  • 11-span Khudafarin Bridge: This one is a bit newer, built in the 13th century. It's 130 meters (about 426 feet) long and has 11 stone arches. Today, this bridge is not used anymore.

Gazanchi Bridge

The Gazanchi Bridge, or Qazançı körpüsü, is another historic bridge. It was built in the 17th century. This bridge is 11 meters (about 36 feet) long and has one stone arch. It's a footbridge that crosses the Alinja River in the Nakhchivan region.

Modern Road and Railway Bridges

Azerbaijan also has many modern bridges that are important for cars and trains. These bridges are often much longer and use different building styles. Here are some of the biggest ones:

Cable-stayed bridge in Baku

This modern bridge in Baku is a type called a "cable-stayed bridge." This means it has strong cables that hold up the bridge deck from tall towers. It was opened in 2012 and is 665 meters (about 2,182 feet) long. It helps cars move easily through a busy interchange over the Boyuk Shor Highway.

Kura River Highway Bridge (Salyan)

This bridge crosses the Kura River near Salyan. It's an "arch bridge" made of steel. The main arch span is 151 meters (about 495 feet) long, and the whole bridge is 363 meters (about 1,191 feet) long. It carries the M3 highway.

Kura River Highway Bridge (Shirvan)

Another important bridge over the Kura River is near Shirvan. This bridge is a "box girder bridge," which means it has a strong, hollow box shape underneath. It's made of concrete and has a main span of 140 meters (about 459 feet). The total length is 318 meters (about 1,043 feet), and it carries the M6 highway.
