List of churches in Peterborough facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The city of Peterborough is home to many churches, both old and new. These are places where people gather for worship, community events, and to learn more about their faith.

Active Churches

Peterborough has about 84 active churches for its population of 197,100 people. This means there's roughly one church for every 2,346 residents.

You won't find any active churches in some smaller areas like Borough Fen, Deeping Gate, Southorpe, St Martin's Without, Ufford, and Wothorpe.

Many of these churches belong to the Church of England, like the historic All Saints in Wittering and St John the Baptist in Barnack. These older churches often date back to medieval times, meaning they are hundreds of years old!

Other churches belong to different Christian groups. For example, there are Methodist churches like Ailsworth Methodist Church, and Baptist churches such as Bretton Baptist Church. You can also find Roman Catholic churches, like Sacred Heart & St Oswald in Peterborough, and churches from groups like the Assemblies of God and Elim.

Some churches have special names or histories. For instance, St Pega in Peakirk has a "unique dedication," meaning it's named after a saint that very few other churches are named after. SS Mary & Botolph in Thorney was once a large abbey before it became a parish church.

Newer churches have also been built to serve growing communities, such as The Holy Spirit in Bretton (built in 1977) and Christ the Servant King in Hampton (around 2014). Some churches meet in community centers or schools, showing how they adapt to serve their local areas.

Defunct Churches

Not all churches remain active forever. Sometimes, churches close down or are no longer used for regular worship. These are called "defunct" or "redundant" churches.

Here are a couple of examples of churches in the Peterborough area that are no longer active:
