List of generation VIII Pokémon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The eighth group of Pokémon, called Generation VIII, brought 96 new kinds of amazing creatures to the Pokémon video games! Most of these, 89 to be exact, first appeared in the 2019 Nintendo Switch games, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. Later, 7 more new Pokémon were added in the 2022 Nintendo Switch game, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. This generation also introduced cool temporary changes called Dynamax and Gigantamax transformations. The first Pokémon from this generation to be shown were the starter Pokémon for Pokémon Sword and Shield on February 27, 2019.

One big difference in this generation is that new Pokémon and special forms were sometimes added through game updates, not just new games. This means you might need to buy extra content to get them all!

How New Pokémon Are Made

The adventure of creating Pokémon Sword and Shield started way back in 2016, right after the games Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon were finished. The team spent about a year just thinking up ideas for the new Pokémon and the Galar region.

The Galar region in Pokémon Sword and Shield is based on Great Britain. So, many of the Pokémon you find there are inspired by British animals, old stories, and myths. For example, the powerful legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta look like wolves, which are often found in British legends. Shigeru Ohmori, the director for Sword and Shield, said that the designers always think about where a Pokémon lives when they create it. This helps make the Pokémon feel real!

Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in the Hisui Region. This region is based on the real-world Japanese island of Hokkaido. It's actually an older version of the Sinnoh Region, which you might know from the Generation IV games. It's like going back in time!

Just like in the last generation, this generation also brought back older Pokémon with new looks and types. These are called "Galarian Forms" and "Hisuian Forms."

Some new Pokémon and regional forms were added to the games through special updates. To get these, players sometimes had to buy extra game content or trade with other players. Later updates added even more legendary and mythical Pokémon like Kubfu, Urshifu, Zarude, Regieleki, Regidrago, Glastrier, Spectrier, and Calyrex.
