Dominica is a beautiful island country in the Caribbean. Like many countries, it has a special leader called the head of government. This person is in charge of running the country day-to-day. In Dominica, this role is held by the Prime Minister of Dominica.
The job of Prime Minister was created in 1978 when Dominica became an independent country. Before that, the leaders had different titles, like Chief Minister and Premier. The current Prime Minister of Dominica is Roosevelt Skerrit, who has been in office since January 8, 2004.

Leaders of Dominica
Over the years, Dominica has had different types of leaders before the Prime Minister role was created. These leaders helped guide the country through important changes.
Chief Ministers (1960–1967)
Before Dominica gained more self-rule, the main leader was called the Chief Minister. This was a time when the country was still closely connected to the United Kingdom.
- Frank Baron was the first Chief Minister, serving from January 1, 1960, to January 21, 1961. He was part of the DUPP.
- Edward Oliver LeBlanc took over on January 21, 1961, and served until March 1, 1967. He was a member of the DLP.
Premiers (1967–1978)
In 1967, Dominica became an "Associated State" of the United Kingdom. This meant it had more control over its own affairs, and the head of government's title changed to Premier.
- Edward Oliver LeBlanc continued as Premier from March 1, 1967, until July 27, 1974. He was still with the DLP.
- Patrick John became Premier on July 28, 1974. He also belonged to the DLP. He served until November 2, 1978, just before Dominica became fully independent.
Prime Ministers (1978–present)
When Dominica became completely independent on November 3, 1978, the top leader's title changed to Prime Minister. This is the highest political office in the country.
- Patrick John became the first Prime Minister of independent Dominica on November 3, 1978. He served until June 25, 1979. He was from the DLP.
- Oliver Seraphin served as an acting Prime Minister from June 25, 1979, to July 21, 1980. He was part of the DDLP.
- Eugenia Charles became Prime Minister on July 21, 1980. She was a very important leader, serving for many years until June 14, 1995. She was the first female Prime Minister of Dominica and was from the DFP.
- Edison James took office on June 14, 1995, and served until February 3, 2000. He represented the UWP.
- Rosie Douglas became Prime Minister on February 3, 2000, and served until October 1, 2000. He was from the DLP.
- Pierre Charles became Prime Minister on October 1, 2000, and served until January 6, 2004. He was also from the DLP.
- Osborne Riviere served as an acting Prime Minister for a short time, from January 6, 2004, to January 8, 2004. He was from the DLP.
- Roosevelt Skerrit became Prime Minister on January 8, 2004, and is still serving today. He is a member of the DLP.
