How the Prime Minister is Chosen
The Constitution of Dominica explains how the Prime Minister is chosen. It says there must be a Prime Minister for Dominica. The President is the one who appoints this leader.
When the President needs to choose a Prime Minister, they pick someone. This person must be an elected member of the House of Assembly. They should also be someone who seems to have the support of most elected members.
What the Prime Minister Does
The Prime Minister has many important duties. They advise the President on who should be in the Cabinet of Ministers. The Cabinet is a group of top government officials.
The Prime Minister also leads Cabinet meetings. In a system like Dominica's, the Prime Minister is often seen as "first among equals." This means they are the leader, but they work with other ministers. However, in smaller island nations like Dominica, Prime Ministers often lead in a strong, presidential way.
