A Look at the Presidency's History
The job of president in Ecuador has often been unstable. Because of this, many different people have held the office throughout the country's history.
Sometimes, the president's duties were taken over by a temporary government or a group led by the military. Often, a temporary or acting president would take charge. Many of these temporary leaders later became elected presidents.
The president who served the most terms was José María Velasco Ibarra. He was president five times!
Recent Presidential Terms
In May 2017, Rafael Correa became the first president in over twenty years to finish his full term. Before him, Sixto Durán Ballén had completed his term from 1992 to 1996.
Between 1996 and 2006, Ecuador faced a lot of political trouble. There was also a serious economic crisis around 1998-2000. During this time, three presidents who were elected after Durán Ballén were removed from office. These were Abdalá Bucaram, Jamil Mahuad, and Lucio Gutiérrez. They were removed in 1997, 2000, and 2005 by popular protests or military/legislative actions.
Since Rafael Correa, another president, Lenín Moreno (2017–2021), also completed his full four-year term. This happened even though there were large protests in 2019 that almost caused his government to fall.
