Political Career
Mayor of Quito
Before becoming president, Mahuad ran for president in 1988. He did not win that election. Later, he became the mayor of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. He served as mayor from 1992 to 1998.
Becoming President
Ten years after his first try, Mahuad won the presidential election in 1998. It was a very close race.
Key Decisions as President
During his presidency, Ecuador faced some tough economic times. To help the economy, Mahuad announced a plan called "dollarization." This meant that Ecuador would stop using its own money, the Ecuadorian sucre, and start using the US dollar instead. The idea was to make the economy more stable.
A very important event during Mahuad's time as president was signing a peace agreement with Peru. This agreement, signed on October 26, 1998, helped end a long-standing border dispute between the two countries. Ecuador gave up some claims to land, and in return, Peru gave Ecuador a small piece of territory. This was a big step for peace in the region.
End of Presidency
Mahuad's popularity dropped during the economic difficulties. He eventually resigned from his position in January 2000. This happened after a week of protests by indigenous groups and a military uprising.
After the Presidency
After leaving office, Jamil Mahuad became a senior advisor. He works at CMI International Group in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
