Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Stillwater County, located in the beautiful state of Montana, is home to many amazing natural features. Among these are at least 80 named lakes and reservoirs. These bodies of water are important for the environment, wildlife, and people who live in or visit the area. They offer places for fun activities like fishing, boating, and hiking, and they also provide water for communities.

What are Lakes and Reservoirs?

Lakes are usually natural bodies of water, often formed over thousands of years by things like glaciers carving out valleys or volcanoes creating craters. They are typically found in low areas where water collects.

Reservoirs, on the other hand, are man-made. They are created by building a dam across a river or stream to hold back water. People build reservoirs for many reasons, such as storing drinking water, generating electricity (called hydropower), controlling floods, or providing water for farms.

Stillwater County has both natural lakes, especially high up in the mountains, and reservoirs that help manage water resources.

Why So Many Lakes in Stillwater County?

Many of Stillwater County's lakes are found in the high mountains, especially within the Beartooth Mountains and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. These areas were shaped by ancient glaciers. As glaciers moved, they scraped out hollows and valleys in the rock. When the glaciers melted, these hollows filled with water, creating the many beautiful lakes we see today.

The elevation of these lakes can vary a lot. Some are at lower elevations, making them easier to reach, while others are high up in the mountains, requiring a hike to get to them. For example, some lakes are over 10,000 feet (about 3,000 meters) above sea level!
